Last week, a group of U.S. Representatives introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at supporting families with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. The bill was presented by Representatives Maria Salazar (FL-27), Dave Min (CA-47), Grace Meng (NY-06), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), Henry Cuellar (TX-28), and Don Bacon (NE-02).

The proposed legislation authorizes the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish a pilot program through the Health Resources and Services Administration. This program would provide grants to nonprofits, community health centers, and hospitals for evidence-based caregiver skills training for family members of children with autism or other developmental disabilities.

Rep. María Elvira Salazar stated, “I’m proud to co-lead the Autism Family Caregivers Act, bipartisan legislation delivering essential support directly to the families who need it most.” She emphasized that the program would equip caregivers with critical skills necessary for caring for loved ones with autism.

Rep. Min highlighted the prevalence of autism in America, noting that “roughly one in thirty-one children are diagnosed with autism.” He stressed the importance of providing parents with tools and support to help their children’s development.

Rep. Fitzpatrick discussed the challenges faced by families navigating autism without adequate guidance and support. He stated that this bill aims to deliver practical training through local organizations to improve outcomes for children.

Rep. Grace Meng expressed her commitment to ensuring caregivers have access to necessary training and support. She said, “Children with autism spectrum disorders deserve all the tools they need to reach their full potential.”

The bill also received support from Rep. Bacon, who mentioned that it will award grants nationwide through a five-year pilot program focused on evidence-based training.

As Co-Chair of the Congressional Autism Caucus, Rep. Cuellar applauded his colleagues’ efforts in introducing this bipartisan act aimed at improving well-being for children with autism.

Keith Wargo, President & CEO of Autism Speaks, praised the legislation’s introduction: “Families have told us time and again how critical caregiver support and training are.” Dr. Paula Pompa-Craven from Easterseals Southern California echoed this sentiment by emphasizing how caregiver training improves well-being for autistic children.

Dr. Hyun Park from Korean Special Education Center expressed strong support due to their experience serving Korean American families affected by developmental disabilities.

The bill has garnered backing from several organizations including Autism Speaks, Easterseals Southern California, National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities among others.

Cosponsors include representatives such as Lou Correa (CA-46), David Valadao (CA-22), Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08), Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05) among others across various states.
