U.S. Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart, Ami Bera, M.D., and Andy Barr have released a statement on the passing of Congressman Gerry Connolly. The three co-chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus expressed their sorrow at the loss of their colleague.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Congressman Gerry Connolly, a dedicated public servant and a fierce champion of the U.S.-Taiwan relationship,” they said. They praised his contributions as Co-Chair of the caucus, highlighting his leadership in shaping U.S. policy toward Taiwan.
Connolly played a key role in promoting legislation that enhanced Taiwan’s global position and bolstered economic ties with the United States. Notably, he introduced the Taiwan International Solidarity Act to counter China’s efforts to marginalize Taiwan internationally. The statement emphasized Connolly’s belief that “Taiwan’s future must be determined by the people of Taiwan—not imposed through coercion or misrepresentation.”
Additionally, Connolly spearheaded the Taiwan Tax Agreement Act aimed at removing double taxation to encourage cross-border investment between the U.S. and Taiwan. This act reflected his understanding that economic collaboration is crucial for a strong partnership.
The congressmen also recognized Connolly’s commitment to democracy and human rights. His numerous visits to Taiwan underscored his dedication to strengthening ties between both nations based on shared values.
The Congressional Taiwan Caucus will feel his absence profoundly but aims to honor his legacy by continuing his work. “Our thoughts are with his family, staff, and constituents during this time of profound loss,” they concluded.
