Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart has emphasized the importance of keeping the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) in Miami, Florida, following the House’s approval of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for 2026. As Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee and a member of its Defense Subcommittee, Díaz-Balart expressed gratitude to Chairman Ken Calvert for including provisions he advocated for in the fiscal year 2026 funding bill.
In his statement, Díaz-Balart highlighted SOUTHCOM’s role as a defense against drug trafficking and transnational criminal organizations, as well as countering China and Russia’s influence in the region. He noted that through regional partnerships, SOUTHCOM has played a crucial role in preventing illegal drugs from entering the United States and impacting financial resources available to anti-American regimes like Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
Díaz-Balart also pointed out that SOUTHCOM’s headquarters in Miami is strategically located near other significant U.S. operational units such as Joint Interagency Task Force – South and Special Operations Command South. This proximity enhances interagency collaboration and supports a comprehensive approach to national security.
He concluded by stating that SOUTHCOM’s presence is essential for safeguarding America from illicit drugs and transnational crime.
