Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart expressed support for the Trump Administration’s decision to withdraw from the 2019 Tomato Suspension Agreement. The decision is said to address concerns regarding the impact of the agreement on American tomato growers, particularly in Florida, due to increased competition from Mexican tomato imports.

Díaz-Balart stated, “For too long, Florida farmers have been hurt by one-sided foreign trade deals like the Tomato Suspension Agreement, which flooded U.S. markets with Mexican tomatoes and put American tomato growers at a significant disadvantage.”

He further elaborated on the efforts made to reach this decision, saying, “After multiple engagements with the U.S. Department of Commerce, I am delighted with the Administration’s announcement of their intent to withdraw from the 2019 Agreement suspending the Antidumping Investigation on Fresh Tomatoes from Mexico. This is a big win for Florida farmers.”

Díaz-Balart commended the action as part of President Trump’s “America First” trade policies, noting, “This is another example of President Trump’s America First trade policies in action, and I thank him and his Administration for standing with our farmers and promoting fair trade policies. This was a long-overdue action that will hold Mexican tomato exporters accountable for circumventing enforcement mechanisms.”
