Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart, representing Florida’s 26th district and serving as Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, led a group of 17 members from the Florida Congressional Delegation in sending a letter to President Trump. The letter requests continued production and deployment of F-35A fighter jets to modernize the outdated F-16C fleet at Homestead Air Reserve Base.

Díaz-Balart emphasized Florida’s strategic importance in national security, citing threats such as drug trafficking and international adversaries. “As Dean of the Florida Delegation, I am acutely aware of the security threats our nation faces from drug trafficking, transnational criminal organizations, and the increasing malign influence and presence of anti-American adversaries like Russia and China in the Southern Hemisphere,” he stated. He further noted that Homestead Air Reserve Base has been essential for over 80 years in defending against these threats.

Congressman Carlos Gimenez also highlighted the urgency for modernization due to growing threats. “As America faces growing threats from our adversaries like Communist China and Putin’s Russia, the need to modernize our air defenses has never been more urgent,” Gimenez said.

The delegation thanked President Trump for his efforts to strengthen military capabilities. They noted that Florida’s location is crucial for countering influences from Chinese, Russian entities, violent extremist organizations (VEOs), and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs). The letter outlines how Homestead plays a significant role in various defense operations including drug interdiction and border protection.

“Under your leadership as both our 45th and 47th president, Florida continues to fight the cartels and drug traffickers,” they wrote. The letter cited significant seizures made by U.S. forces in recent years as evidence of successful efforts against drug trafficking organizations.

The document also addressed concerns about geopolitical activities near U.S. borders, including Russian naval movements close to Florida shores last year. It underscored Homestead’s critical role in hosting key military units involved in these defensive actions.

Finally, it called for assurance that F-35A jets will be allocated to Homestead Air Reserve Base without disruption to production levels: “Together, we ask your administration to ensure that the F-35A goes to Homestead Air Reserve Base.”
