Representative Frederica Wilson, who has served Florida’s 24th district in the U.S. Congress since 2011, addressed several issues of cultural significance and social justice in a series of tweets posted on July 10 and 11, 2025. Wilson, born in Miami in 1942 and an alumna of Fisk University, is recognized as the only Bahamian-American currently serving in Congress.
On July 10, 2025, Wilson highlighted her heritage by stating: “As the only Bahamian-American in Congress, I’m proud to honor our culture and people. Happy 52nd Independence Day to The Bahamas! “.
Later that day, she drew attention to ongoing wage disparities affecting Black women. In her tweet from July 10, she wrote: “For every dollar a white man earns, Black women earn 66 cents. That is unacceptable and it’s about damn time Black women get paid equally. So on this #BlackWomensEqualPayDay, we must recommit ourselves to closing the wage gap.”
On July 11, Wilson addressed concerns over immigration enforcement policies and their impact on families. She stated: “The fear of families being torn apart by extreme deportation policies is widespread. These are not normal times in America. That’s why, by way of a congressional resolution, I am encouraging members of Congress to visit ICE Detention centers to provide oversight in order to”.
Frederica Wilson succeeded Kendrick Meek in representing Florida’s 24th District after previously serving in both chambers of the Florida legislature and on the Broward County school board.
