U.S. Representative Frederica Wilson, who has represented Florida’s 24th district in Congress since 2011, addressed issues of censorship and the ongoing crisis involving hostages taken by Hamas in a series of posts on her social media account this week.
On October 6, Wilson marked Banned Books Week by emphasizing the importance of free expression. She stated, “Censorship has no place in a democracy. This Banned Books Week, we must recommit ourselves to the fight for freedom of speech and expression.”
The following day, Wilson reflected on the second anniversary of an attack carried out by Hamas that resulted in significant casualties and hostages. On October 7, she wrote, “Two years ago, Hamas carried out a horrific attack that killed over 1,200 Israelis and took hundreds hostage. Over the past two years, I’ve spoken with many of their friends and families—their stories are heartbreaking.” In another post made moments later on October 7, Wilson added: “No one should ever have to experience the horror of October 7th. And today, I continue to pray for the release of all the remaining hostages because enough is enough. It’s time we #BringBackTheHostages! #BringThemHome”
Frederica Wilson has held her seat in Congress since succeeding Kendrick Meek in 2011 and previously served both in the Florida Senate from 2002 to 2010 and the Florida House of Representatives from 1998 to 2002. Born in Miami in 1942 and currently residing in Miami Gardens at age 80, she is also a graduate of Fisk University (1963).
