U.S. Representative Frederica Wilson, who has represented Florida’s 24th district in Congress since 2011, posted a series of messages on her social media account addressing both the legacy of Congressman John Lewis and concerns facing her constituents during the State of the Union address.
On February 24, 2026, Wilson commemorated the late civil rights leader with a tribute: “Happy heavenly birthday to our dear Congressman John Lewis. We are still fighting and ‘getting into good trouble.’ We miss you.”
The following day, as President Biden delivered the State of the Union address, Wilson noted her absence from the event. On February 25, she wrote: “The State of the Union is underway. I am not in that chamber tonight.” In a subsequent post made at nearly the same time, she added: “While the President talks about the ‘state of our union,’ families in my district worry about rent, health care costs, and whether their voices will be heard at the ballot box.”
Wilson has served in Congress since replacing Kendrick Meek in 2011 and previously held positions in both chambers of Florida’s state legislature. She was born in Miami in 1942 and currently resides in Miami Gardens. Wilson graduated from Fisk University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963.
