Rep. Frederica Wilson, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 24th district, recently shared her thoughts and emotional tributes via a series of tweets. Known for her commitment to social justice, Wilson took a moment to reflect on personal and pressing political matters.
On April 29, 2025, Wilson commemorated a significant individual in her life by saying, “Happy Birthday Carrie Meek! I miss you and thank you for inspiring me and so many others in your fight for justice.” This tweet underscores the impact that Carrie Meek, a fellow advocate for justice, had on Wilson and others.
The following day, April 30, 2025, Wilson expressed her dismay and concern about the reported death of Marie Ange Blaise, a Haitian immigrant, in ICE custody. She tweeted, “I’m heartbroken and furious about Marie Ange Blaise, a Haitian immigrant who died in ICE custody at the Broward Transitional Center. How many more stories do we have to hear of immigrants being mistreated at these black hole detention centers? When are we going to get answers?” Wilson’s statement highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of immigrants in detention centers.
Further addressing the issue, Wilson called for increased oversight of immigration policies, stating, “Congress needs to ensure proper oversight over this administration’s immigration policies and all members of Congress must visit ICE facilities across the country because clearly ICE does not give a damn about our immigrant communities.” Her stand signifies the need for accountability and restructuring within immigration enforcement.
Rep. Frederica Wilson has served in the U.S. Congress since 2011 after succeeding Kendrick Meek. With a history of civic engagement that includes her tenure in the Florida Senate and House of Representatives, she is a distinguished Florida native with a degree from Fisk University.
