U.S. Representative Frederica Wilson, who represents Florida’s 24th district, posted a series of tweets on July 18, 2025, expressing concerns over the defunding of children’s educational programming and criticizing tax breaks for wealthy individuals.
In her first tweet, Wilson stated: “We are defunding Sesame Street, programs like Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and all of the wonderful programming for preschoolers that have shaped generations of ‘little just-wannabe-good-citizens children.’” (July 18, 2025).
She continued by highlighting the importance of public broadcasting in another post: “And so many of us, while riding in the car, are kept up to date on what’s in the news from our historic local WLRN and the always-reliable PBS channels.” (July 18, 2025).
In a third tweet from the same day, Wilson questioned the rationale behind these funding cuts: “And for what? To give tax breaks to greedy billionaires who, if they spent 10 million dollars a day for the next 50 years, would still be rich.”
Frederica Wilson has represented Florida’s 24th District in Congress since 2011 and previously served in both chambers of Florida’s state legislature. She succeeded Kendrick Meek as U.S. Representative and is known for her advocacy on education and community issues. Born in Miami in 1942 and currently residing in Miami Gardens, Wilson graduated from Fisk University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963.
