Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart has reintroduced legislation aimed at creating a unique ZIP code for the Town of Miami Lakes. Partnering with him on this measure is Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who serves as co-lead on the bill. In the Senate, the companion bill has been introduced by Senators Rick Scott, Joni Ernst, and Alex Padilla.
Congressman Díaz-Balart highlighted the various challenges Miami Lakes has faced since its incorporation in 2000 due to the absence of its own ZIP code. According to him, this situation has led to frequent mail and package delivery issues, inaccurate census data affecting the town’s revenue, and volatile insurance rates. Furthermore, this lack often results in voter confusion at the polls due to unclear precinct assignments.
“The Town of Miami Lakes, which I have the privilege and honor of representing, has faced countless hurdles since its incorporation in 2000 due to the lack of its own ZIP code,” stated Congressman Díaz-Balart. He continued by stressing the necessity for Miami Lakes to have its unique ZIP code to enhance the quality of life for its residents and called upon his colleagues to support and pass the bill.
Mayor of Miami Lakes, Joshua Dieguez, emphasized the community’s long-standing anticipation for a ZIP code that aligns with their identity and necessities. He stated, “Miami Lakes has waited over 20 years for a ZIP code that reflects our identity and meets our needs. Our residents deserve accurate services, fair insurance rates, and clarity at the polls.”
Díaz-Balart’s efforts to secure a dedicated ZIP code for Miami Lakes date back several years. In 2016, he included a provision in H.R. 6303 authorizing this change, which passed the House but awaited Senate consideration. Similar legislation was reintroduced in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023, continuing to strive towards addressing this local issue.
