Mario Díaz-Balart, a U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 26th District since 2003, addressed several issues on his social media account on August 7, 2025. Díaz-Balart, who was born in Fort Lauderdale in 1961 and resides in Miami, posted about the Cuban government, Purple Heart Day, and U.S.–Colombia relations.
In a tweet posted at 03:14 UTC, Díaz-Balart commented on financial conditions within the Cuban military and the role of U.S. policy. He stated: “Mientras el régimen en La Habana culpa al embargo, documentos filtrados revelan que los militares cubanos rebosan de dinero. Mi proyecto de ley de Asignaciones garantiza que ni un solo centavo del contribuyente estadounidense los respalde y bloquea la ayuda a cualquiera que” (August 7, 2025).
Later that day at 15:09 UTC, he marked Purple Heart Day with a message honoring U.S. service members: “On Purple Heart Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who have been wounded or killed in action while serving our country.
We are the land of the free because of the heroic actions and unwavering dedication of those who answer the call to serve and protect our” (August 7, 2025).
At 15:34 UTC on the same day, Díaz-Balart discussed meeting Tomás Uribe—son of former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe—and expressed concerns about legal developments in Colombia. He wrote: “It was a pleasure meeting with Tomás Uribe, son of former President Álvaro Uribe.
The ongoing violations of the rule of law in Colombia are outrageous and pose a serious threat to the strength of the U.S.–Colombia relationship.” (August 7, 2025).
Díaz-Balart has held his congressional seat for over two decades after serving in both chambers of Florida’s legislature from 1988 to 2000. He is an alumnus of the University of South Florida.
