Mario Díaz-Balart, a U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 26th District since 2003 and a longtime figure in Florida politics, posted a series of tweets between May 17 and May 20, 2026, highlighting his concerns about national security threats linked to Cuba and honoring the memory of a Cuban dissident.
On May 17, Díaz-Balart wrote: “We’ve seen the threat drones pose in the Middle East. Now they are 90 miles from our shores and near critical infrastructure. It’s clear that the Cuban regime is a national security threat.”

Díaz-Balart also addressed human rights abuses in Cuba on May 20, stating: “El régimen castrista tiene sangre en sus manos.
Díaz-Balart was born in Fort Lauderdale in 1961 and currently resides in Miami. He holds a BA from the University of South Florida. Before his tenure in Congress began in 2003, he served in both the Florida House of Representatives (1988-1992) and the Florida Senate (1992-2000).
The congressman’s recent posts reflect longstanding concerns among some U.S. lawmakers regarding Cuban government activities near American territory as well as continued criticism of human rights practices under Cuba’s ruling regime.
