Miami Dolphins release quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with post-June 1 designation

The Miami Dolphins announced on March 12 that they have released quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with a post-June 1 designation.

Tagovailoa’s departure marks the end of his six-season tenure with the team, during which he played in 78 games and started in 76. His time with the Dolphins included significant achievements, such as completing 1,647 of 2,421 passes for a total of 18,166 yards and throwing for 120 touchdowns. He also contributed on the ground with six rushing touchdowns over his career.

During his stint in Miami from 2020 to 2025, Tagovailoa set several franchise records. These include the highest career completion percentage at 68.0 percent, the single-season completion percentage record at 72.9 percent in 2024, and the best career passer rating at 96.4. He was recognized as a Pro Bowl selection in 2023 and served as a team captain for four consecutive seasons from 2022 through 2025.

Tagovailoa’s accolades also include leading the National Football League in passer rating (105.5) in 2022, passing yards (4,624) in 2023, and completion percentage (72.9) in 2024. He was named the team’s Don Shula Leadership Award winner in 2022 and was an Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award finalist in 2024.

Tagovailoa joined Miami as a first-round pick (fifth overall) out of the University of Alabama during the NFL Draft in 2020.
