The Miami Dolphins announced on March 12 that they have signed safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. as an unrestricted free agent.
Johnson Jr. brings experience to the Dolphins, having played in 92 career games with 22 starts over seven seasons in the National Football League. His previous teams include Houston, Tennessee, New Orleans, Carolina, and Las Vegas. During his career, he has recorded 198 tackles (139 solo), four interceptions, 17 passes defensed, and one fumble recovery. He has also appeared in two postseason games with one start while playing for Houston.
Johnson Jr. entered the league as a second-round pick (54th overall) by Houston in the 2019 NFL Draft. Before his professional career, he spent two seasons at Kentucky from 2017 to 2018, where he played in 26 games with 18 starts and totaled 64 tackles (52 solo), one sack, one interception, nine passes defensed, and one forced fumble.
The addition of Johnson Jr. is expected to strengthen the Dolphins’ defensive backfield with his versatility and experience gained across multiple teams.
