The Miami Dolphins announced on Mar. 13 the signing of veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez, adding experience to their special teams unit. Gonzalez, who was drafted in the seventh round in 2017 by the Cleveland Browns, has played for seven teams over a nine-year career and most recently spent the 2025 season with the Atlanta Falcons.

Gonzalez’s addition is seen as an effort to strengthen the Dolphins’ kicking game following his strong performance last season. He began the 2025 campaign as a free agent but joined Atlanta on Nov. 5 and quickly became a key contributor. Gonzalez was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week twice for his performances against the New Orleans Saints, converting multiple long-range field goals and helping secure victories for his team.

During his time with Atlanta, Gonzalez made 19 out of 22 field goal attempts and converted 17 of his 18 extra point tries. Two of his missed field goals were from beyond 50 yards. His accuracy contributed to Atlanta’s improved record in the second half of the season, where he went 13-for-14 on field goals during five wins.

Gonzalez brings a decorated college background as well, having won the Lou Groza Award in 2016 as college football’s best kicker while at Arizona State University. He set an FBS record with 116 career field goal attempts and left school holding several records, including Pac-12 all-time points leader.

The move also reunites Gonzalez with Chris Tabor, who served as special teams coordinator during Gonzalez’s standout NFL season in Carolina in 2021. Tabor was recently hired by head coach Jeff Hafley to join Miami’s staff.
