Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart of Florida has announced the groundbreaking ceremony for PortMiami’s new Phytosanitary and Cold Chain Processing Facility. The facility is expected to enhance the safety and efficiency of agricultural products transiting through the port.
“This groundbreaking is more than just a milestone; it’s a promise fulfilled,” stated Díaz-Balart. He highlighted that in 2020, he secured $44 million in federal funding for this project, which will support the safe handling of fruits, vegetables, and flowers from South America.
The congressman emphasized his commitment to fostering economic growth and supporting local jobs while enhancing national security. He acknowledged partnerships with local leaders such as former Port Director Juan Kuryla and current PortMiami Director Hydi Webb in identifying barriers and crafting solutions.
In 2019, as Chairman of the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Subcommittee on Appropriations, Díaz-Balart established a dedicated federal funding stream for seaports under the Port Infrastructure Development Program. From this program, he secured $93 million for critical infrastructure needs at top-tier ports.
The facility’s completion was delayed due to land use for debris removal following the 2021 Surfside condo collapse tragedy. Once operational, it will support various goods including food products free from pests and diseases.
PortMiami had faced limitations with its fumigation capacity compared to other ports. This new facility aims to expand capacity and reduce costs while ensuring faster handling of perishable goods.
