In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Since then, law enforcement officers have traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in events honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
In observance of National Police Week 2025, Representative Mario Díaz-Balart expressed gratitude for police officers in Florida’s 26th Congressional District. He acknowledged their dedication to protecting communities, upholding the rule of law, ensuring public safety, and combating crime.
Díaz-Balart announced his support for several bills introduced by Republican colleagues aimed at reinforcing commitment to police officers nationwide. The proposed legislation includes:
– House Concurrent Resolution 30: Expresses support for local law enforcement officers.
– Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act: Requires the Attorney General to compile reports on violence against law enforcement officers and evaluate program effectiveness to enhance officer safety.
– LEOSA Reform Act: Eases restrictions on concealed-carry rights for qualified officers.
– Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act of 2025: Permits law enforcement officers to purchase their retired firearms.
Díaz-Balart highlighted his efforts in securing $8.116 million in federal funding during Fiscal Years 2023 and 2024 for Collier and Miami-Dade counties. This funding aims to enhance public safety and equip law enforcement with necessary tools.
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen public safety and build resilient communities.
