Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava statement on the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court

1

Miami Dade County issued the following announcement on Feb. 25.

Raised in Miami-Dade County, Brown Jackson would be the first Black woman to serve on the High Court.

Today, President Joe Biden nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to succeed retiring Justice Stephen Breyer on the United States Supreme Court. Judge Brown Jackson currently serves as United States Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C.Circuit. In response, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava released the following statement on Brown Jackson’s nomination:

“It is with great hometown pride that I support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States. Her unparalleled experience and inspiring personal narrative will make her a uniquely qualified nominee to serve on the highest court in our nation and to deliver fair and impartial rulings on our county’s most challenging issues.

“We are so proud that Judge Brown Jackson’s roots run deep here in Miami-Dade. A product of our Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Judge Brown Jackson has long been recognized by her peers, her mentors, and the legal community as a jurist of the utmost integrity.

“For more than two decades, she has served on the United States Sentencing Commission, and as a District and Circuit Court judge, making her among the most experienced judges to be considered in recent memory. Now, more than ever, we need jurists of her caliber and dedication.

“Most importantly, her understanding of our justice system is intimately personal. Judge Brown Jackson has family on both sides of the criminal justice system, with one uncle who served as a Miami city police chief and another who served time in jail.

“Our future generations deserve a Supreme Court Justice they can look up to. It is with whole-hearted admiration and respect for Judge Brown Jackson’s skill, prudence and overwhelming legal expertise that I support her nomination to the High Court.”
