Miami Dade County recently issued the following announcement.
Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department offers tips, opportunities to save water
Changing little habits is more than a drop in the bucket when our precious drinking water supply experiences decreased rainfall and peak water demands during this time of year, stressing regional water supplies. April is considered the height of dry season in South Florida and Miami-Dade County celebrates it as Water Conservation Month by sharing tips and opportunities to save water.
“Miami-Dade County is committed to conserving and protecting our critical water resources, not just in April, but year-round. We are inviting our residents to play their part in safeguarding our drinking water so present and future generations can thrive and continue to enjoy the beautiful environment we all love so much,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.
“We are also investing billions of dollars in our infrastructure as a pledge to ensure that we have a resilient, sustainable community that provides for the future health and prosperity of our community for decades to come.”
The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) has a successful water conservation program that makes saving water easy.
“There are several simple and common-sense actions each of us can take that, when added up, can make a tremendous difference for our water supply throughout the year,” said WASD Director Roy Coley. “I’m pleased to announce that our department will be partnering with Miami-Dade County Public Libraries to host shower head and light bulb exchanges throughout the month of April so residents not only save water and energy, but money, as well.”
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates at the listed library branches, residents can exchange up to 3 incandescent lightbulbs and two old showerheads for new high efficiency models. Each upgraded shower head can save up to 2,900 gallons of water per year.
Friday, April 1 – North Dade Regional Library, 2455 NW 183 St.
Tuesday, April 5 – South Dade Regional Library, 10750 SW 211 St.
Tuesday, April 12 – Westchester Regional Library, 9445 Coral Way
Tuesday, April 19 – West Kendall Regional Library, 10201 Hammocks Blvd.
Tuesday, April 26 – Aventura Branch Library, 2930 Aventura Blvd.
WASD also offers rebates to replace old toilets and shower heads with high-efficiency models, which also will dramatically cut down on each household’s water consumption. The department also offers lawn irrigation rebates.
Since the department’s water conservation program began, Miami-Dade County residents have decreased their per capita water consumption by 12 percent by taking advantage of the department’s conservation tips and rebates. Go to WASD’s water conservation page for additional tips and information on the rebate programs.
Another opportunity to decrease water consumption is to adhere to Miami-Dade County’s permanent watering restrictions. No lawn irrigation is allowed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Odd-numbered addresses may water on Wednesdays and Saturdays either before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Even-numbered addresses may water their lawn on Thursdays and Sundays during the same time frames.
It is the priority of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department to provide safe, reliable service to its customers. For additional information about department services and programs, visit the department’s website.
