M-DCPS to Commemorate the Life of the late U.S. Rep. Carrie P. Meek on April 29, 2022

3

The Miami-Dade School Board approved an item last December to designate April 29, 2022, as a day in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) to commemorate the significant accomplishments of U.S. Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek.

Born April 29, 1926, Congresswoman Meek was the daughter of sharecroppers and the granddaughter of enslaved people. In 1992, overcoming adversity and countless obstacles, she became the first African American lawmaker to represent the State of Florida in Congress since the Reconstruction Era.

Throughout her career as an educator, Florida House Representative, Florida Senator and U.S. Representative, Congresswoman Meek served as a voice for those who were underrepresented and underserved. Affectionally known as the “Mother of Miami,” Congresswoman Meek has been respected for her commitment, dedication and service to the students and parents of our community. Her legacy will continue to live on through the people she has inspired, her legislative actions, the Carrie P. Meek/Westview K-8 Center, and now through the recognition and observance of her birthdate by M-DCPS.

M-DCPS’ Department of Social Sciences has created resources for all school levels, including lesson plans and activities for teachers to use during this commemoration.
