FIU again among the top performers in State University System

4

For the second year in a row, FIU ranks among the top three public universities in the state, according to the Florida Board of Governors' performance metric scores. This marks the third time in the last five years that FIU ranks in the top three of Florida’s public universities in a state that has the No.1-ranked public university system in the country for higher education.

FIU’s score of 91 points out of a possible 100 was the third-highest among Florida’s 12 State University System institutions. The scores are based on 11 metrics that measure graduation rates, graduates’ wages, cost of attendance to students and other key indicators.

“Our performance metric score is an indication that FIU has succeeded in helping our students excel in college and kick off successful careers,” said FIU Interim President Kenneth A. Jessell. “Our success is also leading to national recognition for the innovative work we are doing to ensure students graduate on time with the skills they need to excel in the 21st-century global economy.”

Today’s news comes one year after FIU earned a historic score of 99 points and on the heels of a 17-spot improvement in U.S. News and World Report rankings among public universities in the nation.

The latest BOG performance metric score is one more factor in the university’s five-year upward trajectory.

“At FIU, we have used the Board of Governors’ performance metrics as a roadmap for innovation in areas such as timely graduation and enhancing the student experience while remaining focused on student success and research excellence," said FIU Interim Provost Elizabeth M. Bejar.

This year, FIU showed advances in several key areas: four-year graduation rate (10.1% improvement), students graduating with bachelor’s degrees in high-demand areas (7% improvement) and graduation rate for transfer students who came to FIU with an associate degree (4.4% improvement).

FIU’s success serves as a case study for a recently launched open-access online course aimed at guiding higher education faculty, staff and leaders through vital elements of institutional transformation. The course was created by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and Coalition of Urban Serving Universities.

FIU’s achievements are good news for students and Florida taxpayers.

Since 2014, FIU has received $31.9 million in special performance funding from the Florida Legislature out of the $265 million allocated to the State University System. The university will receive an additional $946,365 in non-recurring funds for being in the Top 3. These funds have been reinvested to improve student recruitment, retention and graduation, the enhancement of STEM success, faculty/staff support and development, academic and career advisors, internship programs, scholarships, comprehensive business intelligence and analytics solutions and support research faculty cluster hires.
