A statement was made in Miami Gardens on Thursday afternoon for the St. Thomas University Men's Basketball team (1-0) season opener. The Bobcats did not hold back in game one hitting the triple-digit mark on the scoreboard. This is just the second time the Bobcats have hit 100 or more points in the Patrick Crarey era, the last time being on December 30 against Vermont Tech at the Keiser Classic.
St. Thomas started the game on a 24-0 run keeping the Celtics scoreless through just under 12 minutes of play. The first point scored for Carlow was a free throw at the eight minute mark. Point Guard Fred Mulbah scored the first basket of the 2022-23 season off a fast break layup from a Daniel Ogoro steal. Earlier in the afternoon, Ogoro was named a player to watch as released by the Sun Conference.
The defense had the pedal to the medal picking up nine steals and three blocks while forcing countless turnovers and bad shots. Carlow had 22 turnovers in the first half and shot 2-21 on the field. This was the lowest points allowed in a half in program history for the Bobcats. On the offense end, STU shot over 50-perfect from the field in the first half. Dalon Dean had the hot hand off the bench and led the way with 10 points in the first half.
The second half saw a bit more of a push back from the Celtics as they went on to score 37 points. St. Thomas would just overpower Carlow shooting better in the back 20 minutes. STU shot 58% from the field while going 7-15 behind the arc.
The stat sheet would be way lopsided in favor of the navy and burgundy. STU dominated the boards with 48 rebounds. Also, denied the acética of each reaching half court in many of their 23 steals. Forty-four points were scored off turnovers.
Dean led the team with 20 points which accounted for early half of the 56 bench points. Jordan Hernandez shot the best behind the arc going 4-for-5. All 15 players had a time on the court and recorded on stat, 13 registered a point.
Justyn Rogers, Milton Matthews, and Daniel Ogoro led the way with six rebounds. Ogoro also led in assists with five. Hernandez picked the most pockets with four steals.
It was a great start to year two of the Crarey Era and a good sign of what is to come for Bobcat Basketball this season.
St. Thomas returns right back to the court tomorrow to take on the University of the Virgin Islands at 5:30 p.m. with a special halftime presentation to inductee Biscayne College Men's Basketball player James Chaley into the Bobcat Hall of Fame.
