Men's Soccer Fights Off Bulldogs To Reach Quarterfinals

The 23rd-ranked Barry Buccaneers rallied from a goal down to defeat the Wingate Bulldogs at Rick Stottler Field in the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament on Friday afternoon and advance to the tournament quarterfinals.

SUMMARY:

  • 13:52 - The Bulldogs got on the board first, early in the opening period, when Mattia Ditommaso took a feed from Guilherme Fontes right in front of the goal and scored on the first shot of the game for the Bulldogs. | Wingate 1, Barry 0
  • 55:40 - After a corner kick by Lucas Silva, Juan Simoniello put a shot off the right post. It riccocheted out to Jordi Ramon, who tucked a header inside the left post to equalize.  | Barry 1, Wingate 1 
  • 69:54 - Barry got on top in the 70th minute. David Polanco drove a ball all the way down to the endline and cut in toward goal. His cross got to Daniel Schaal, who touchedit back to Nicolas Villalobos at the top of the box. Villalobobs blasted the shot past Wingate keeper Aleksa Janjic for the game-winner.  | Barry 2, Wingate 1
NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry dominated play, out-shooting the Bulldogs 27-8, including 10-4 on goal, and recording 65 percent of the possession. In the second half, Barry upped its possession to 72 percent.
  • Nils Buecheler had three saves for the Bucs in recording his seventh win of the season.
  • Janjic had eight saves for Wingate, but conceded multiple goals for the just the second time this season.
  • The trip to the quarterfinals is the fourth for the Bucs and the first since winnning the 2018 NCAA D-II National Champsionship.
ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs take on the winner of the Florida Tech/Rollins match on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3:00 pm at Rick Stottler Field.
