University community invited to weigh in on The Underline project

Two meetings have been organized to get ideas from community members and others on how to enhance the third phase of the project that continues to build a public walkway underneath the Metrorail.

Several public meetings have been arranged to invite members of the University community and others to offer suggestions as to what the third phase of the The Underline should look like.

The 10-mile, 120-acre stretch of land in Miami-Dade County lies below Miami’s Metrorail—from the Miami River to the Dadeland South station. The area is being transformed as a connecting pedestrian walkway with small parks, seating areas, and bicycle trails.

The first two phases of the Underline project are completed. University of Miami School of Architecture students participated in drawing attention to the project in 2014 with several exhibitions and outdoor events.

Now, the third phase of the project is about to break ground. This stretch would extend from SW 19th Avenue to the Dadeland South Metrorail station, traveling along a stretch of the University’s Coral Gables Campus at Metrorail’s University Station.

Meg Daly, founder and president of Friends of The Underline, invites members of the University community to attend the meetings, where suggestions by area residents will be gathered.

“Now is the time to tell us your priorities for The Underline,” Daly said.“What do you want to see there and what do you want to do there. From pets to play to plants, what are your top priorities and interests.”

The following are the dates and locations of the meetings.

In person meeting: Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Coral Gables Museum, Community Meeting Room, 285 Aragon Ave. There is metered street parking and a city garage.

Virtual meeting: Monday, Dec. 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration is required to participate.

The Underline is a public-private partnership between the Department of Transportation and Public Works; the Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department; Friends of The Underline; City of Miami; and City of Coral Gables.

The Underline Conservancy (TUC) Board of Directors oversees the operations and maintenance of The Underline. The board is made up of a group of nine civic, business, and community leaders.

The Underline project is scheduled to be finished in 2026.
