FIU ranks No. 8 nationally for students’ return on investment, according to a newly released ranking.

The analysis, done by Degree Choices, used public sources of data to objectively rank more than 2,200 four-year colleges and universities based on the cost of attending and the earnings a student can expect. When compared to students of the same cohort, FIU graduates carry less debt and earn more.

FIU is ranked among private institutions such as Princeton and University of Pennsylvania and public institutions such as California Institute of Technology and University of Florida.

“This is not just another ranking. This ranking uses objective measures to rank universities based on the cost of attendance and the earnings a student can expect,” said FIU President Kenneth A. Jessell. “It is incredibly meaningful as it showcases that FIU is dedicated to academic excellence, outcomes and providing individuals and the state of Florida an incredible return on investment.”

Degree Choice’s data-driven rankings confirm that FIU is providing excellence and opportunity so that students can look forward to successful careers and prosperous lives. The ranking found that it takes FIU graduates less than a year to “pay back” the cost of their education.

“Students come to FIU to learn from our dedicated faculty who are committed to addressing the most complex problems through our focus on solutions-centered research, and to benefit from our commitment that every student has the opportunity to gain the knowledge and tools they need to launch successful careers,” said Interim Provost and Executive Vice President Elizabeth M. Béjar. “Together with our faculty, our graduates contribute to make FIU a major economic engine in Florida with the majority of our nearly 300,000 alumni remaining in the state after graduation.”

With a student body of more than 56,000, FIU is the nation’s largest producer of degrees awarded to minority students. The Carnegie R1, very high research university ranks No. 72 among public universities in U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings. Additionally, U.S. News ranks FIU No. 4 for social mobility among all U.S. universities.
