Washington, D.C. – Today, Reps. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and Carlos A. Giménez (R-FL) honored Vicky Dávila, director of Revista Semana, for her dedication to quality investigative journalism in Colombia amidst challenges faced under President Gustavo Petro's administration.
"It is an honor to receive Vicky Dávila in the U.S. Capitol, the heart of American democracy," said Rep. Salazar. "We in Congress are here to defend journalists like Vicky and to defend Colombia’s honor."
Last year, President Petro criticized the Colombian press, accusing them of "misinforming the public" and "promoting disinformation in the public opinion." Rep. Salazar, as Chairwoman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee and a former journalist, strongly condemned these attacks and continues to support the Colombian press.
During the event, Rep. Salazar reiterated her commitment to standing with those in Colombia fighting for democracy, stating, "We must stand with those journalists on the ground fighting to preserve Colombia’s vibrant democracy."
Congresswoman Salazar's advocacy for press freedom is significant as she represents thousands of Americans of Colombian descent in Florida’s 27th Congressional District. The Colombian diaspora in the United States numbers over 1.4 million, making it one of the largest Hispanic diasporas in the country.
