Representative Maria Elvira Salazar and Carlos A. Giménez honored Vicky Dávila, director of the Colombian news outlet Revista Semana, for her dedication to quality investigative journalism amidst challenges in Colombia. Salazar stated, “It is an honor to welcome Vicky Dávila to the United States Capitol, the heart of American democracy. We in Congress are here to defend journalists like Vicky and uphold the honor of Colombia.”

Last year, Colombian President Gustavo Petro caused shockwaves by suggesting that the press in his country was spreading misinformation. Salazar, as the Chair of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee and a former journalist, strongly condemned these attacks in a hearing in July 2023 and continues to support Colombian press freedom.

At the event with Representative Giménez, Congresswoman Salazar reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for the voices in Colombia that are fighting for democracy. Salazar, who represents a significant Colombian American population in Florida's 27th Congressional District, emphasized the importance of supporting journalists on the front lines of defending democracy.
