Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) celebrated the one-year anniversary of the introduction of her bipartisan immigration legislation, the Dignity Act (H.R. 3599). The bill has continued to garner support from various stakeholders across the nation aiming to address issues within the U.S. immigration system.
The Dignity Act remains a prominent piece of legislation in Congress addressing multiple facets of immigration reform. These include securing the border, ending catch and release policies, reforming the asylum system, providing solutions for undocumented individuals, and modernizing legal immigration processes.
“I am proud of the significant momentum the Dignity Act has gained since Rep. Escobar and I introduced this bill a year ago,” said Rep. Salazar. “The Dignity Act is the only way forward Congress has on immigration. To solve our southern border and immigration crisis, Congress must come together to pass this legislation now!”
Since its introduction in May 2023, more than 35 legislators have supported the Dignity Act, with endorsements from over 50 organizations. The bill has received extensive media coverage with positive analyses from economists, security experts, and policy research institutions.
Key points highlighted by supporters include:
- Ending the crisis at the border
- Bringing trillions in economic growth
- Saving Social Security and Medicare
The Brookings Institution reported that several provisions of the Dignity Act could enhance America’s healthcare system while offering macroeconomic benefits that might help save Social Security and Medicare. Additionally, an analysis by the Bipartisan Policy Center projected that reforms under this act could contribute over $4 trillion to U.S. GDP growth within ten years.
Primarily focused on immigration and national security, the Dignity Act aims to secure the Southern Border comprehensively—a challenge that partisan solutions have yet to overcome effectively.
Support for this legislation spans various sectors including businesses, agricultural groups, faith communities, educators, national security experts, community leaders, ambassadors, and senators.
