As co-chairs of the Congressional Latino-Jewish Caucus, Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart and Debbie Wasserman Schultz emphasized the significant roles that Jewish and Latino communities play in American society, particularly in South Florida. In an op-ed for the Miami Herald, they highlighted their contributions to various sectors including business, culture, and public service.
They stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties with ancestral lands and noted shared values such as family, faith, and respect for human rights. These connections have positioned both communities to advocate for justice domestically and internationally.
The representatives also addressed current challenges faced by these communities in the U.S., pointing out increased antisemitism since October 7 attacks and a rise in hate crimes against Jews and Latinos. They referenced legislation like the Khalid Jabara and Heather Heyer NO HATE Act aimed at combating such issues.
Internationally, they called attention to hostages held by Hamas and political repression in countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. They criticized regimes that suppress democratic movements and persecute minority communities.
Díaz-Balart and Wasserman Schultz underscored the need for continued collaboration between Jewish and Latino Americans to combat hate, promote freedom, and oppose oppressive regimes.
"Within the framework of Hispanic Heritage Month," they wrote, "let’s celebrate our common bonds while continuing to look out for one another."
Mario Díaz-Balart serves Florida’s 26th Congressional District on several committees. Debbie Wasserman Schultz represents Florida's 25th Congressional District with key roles on military construction subcommittees.
