Reps. María Elvira Salazar and Vern Buchanan, along with 53 other members of the House of Representatives, have called for accountability from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This demand follows reports that a FEMA supervisor instructed staff to avoid providing storm assistance to homes displaying campaign signs supporting President-elect Trump.
Reports from within FEMA suggest that many homes with pro-Trump signs were bypassed by relief workers in Florida and the Carolinas following Hurricane Milton. The supervisor claimed this political discrimination was not isolated to Florida and alleged that "senior leadership will lie to you and tell you that they don't know," while denying assistance nationwide.
Rep. Salazar stated, "The federal government’s disaster relief services are meant to help Americans regardless of their political affiliation. The fact that the Biden-Harris Administration’s FEMA allowed aid to be prioritized based on their support for President-elect Trump is completely un-American." She demanded answers from Administrator Criswell regarding these directives.
Rep. Buchanan added, "FEMA has a responsibility to serve every American equally, regardless of political affiliation—especially in times of crisis. It is deeply disturbing that FEMA would allow political bias to influence its disaster relief efforts."
The lawmakers emphasized, "Americans deserve better. In this country, we protect all our citizens, regardless of political affiliation." They urged FEMA to take action, hold those responsible accountable, and restore public trust.
