Rep. Frederica Wilson, who has served in the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 24th district since 2011, recently shared her involvement in community events and raised concerns about safety around the Capitol complex through a series of tweets.
On December 4, 2024, Rep. Wilson announced her participation in a local holiday event: "Christmas is a wonderful time of year for the community to come together, and I’m joining the Ark of the City, @MiamiDadeCounty, and @CityofMiami for Christmas on 15th Ave as part of their Wall of Fame Honorees." She encouraged people to join in for this festive parade and festival.
Later that day, she expressed concerns about inadequate lighting at the Capitol plaza. At 23:30 UTC, she tweeted: "The Capitol plaza is too damn dark! We need more lighting around the Capitol complex @SpeakerJohnson." Emphasizing its importance as a national symbol visible across Washington D.C., she added that it was difficult to recognize faces due to poor lighting conditions at night.
In another tweet posted almost simultaneously at 23:30 UTC, Rep. Wilson highlighted safety issues during voting times: "Around voting times, there are hundreds of Congresspeople, staffers, and press walking around. Cars are driving and you can barely see people walking." She described how dimly lit surroundings give an impression that no one is present during these critical periods when important legislation is being voted on.
