Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart of Florida's 26th district expressed his support following the U.S. Senate's approval of H.R. 5863, known as the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2023. The bill, which Díaz-Balart co-sponsored and supported in a vote on May 22, 2024, aims to provide tax relief to individuals affected by recent hurricanes.
"The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2023 (H.R. 5863), which I proudly cosponsored and voted in favor of on May 22, 2024, passed the Senate earlier this week," stated Congressman Díaz-Balart.
The legislation seeks to assist those impacted by Hurricanes Ian and subsequent storms such as Idalia, Nicole, Fiona, Debby, Helene, and Milton. These storms caused significant damage in Florida and disrupted the lives of many residents. The bill proposes removing certain tax barriers for those affected by these disasters.
"Many Floridians are still struggling to recover from the financial toll of these disasters," said Díaz-Balart. "H.R. 5863 addresses this need by removing the minimum loss threshold to qualify for tax write-offs and the requirement for itemizing deductions."
Díaz-Balart highlighted his involvement with the bill due to his experiences witnessing hurricane impacts in Southwest Florida. He noted that he was proactive in sponsoring this legislation from its early stages.
"Having witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of these hurricanes in Southwest Florida, I am proud to have been the first Member of Congress off the committee of jurisdiction to sponsor this bill," he added.
With Senate approval secured, Congressman Díaz-Balart emphasized that President Biden's signature is now required for H.R. 5863 to become law.
"Now, the next step is for President Biden to sign this important legislation into law," he remarked.
Looking ahead to future legislative sessions, Díaz-Balart reaffirmed his commitment to supporting his constituents' needs through continued advocacy and legislative efforts.
"While I am pleased to have helped advance H.R. 5863, I know there is more work ahead," he concluded. "As we prepare for the 119th Congress, I remain committed to advocating for the priorities of Florida's 26th district and advancing legislation that provides meaningful support for our communities."
