The House of Representatives has approved H.R. 6394, the Semiquincentennial Congressional Time Capsule Act. This bill was introduced by Representatives María Elvira Salazar from Florida and Bonnie Watson Coleman from New Jersey. The legislation allows the Architect of the Capitol to create a time capsule that will be buried on the west lawn of the Capitol. It is scheduled to remain sealed until July 4, 2276, marking America's 500th anniversary.
Congresswoman Salazar, co-chair of the Congressional America250 Caucus, is at the forefront of this initiative. The Caucus provides a platform for lawmakers to engage in and promote activities related to America's 250th anniversary celebration, set for July 4, 2026. This aligns with efforts by the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission established by Congress in 2016.
"Since 1776, the American experiment has been a beacon of hope to the entire world," stated Representative Salazar. "As America is about to celebrate its 250th birthday, it’s fitting to create a time capsule to be opened 250 years from now – for America’s 500th birthday, with contents that will showcase American exceptionality to future Americans."
Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman expressed satisfaction with the bipartisan support for her legislation: "I am so pleased the House overwhelmingly passed my bipartisan legislation to commemorate America’s 250th Birthday with a time capsule." She highlighted how this initiative would allow future generations to view a snapshot of today's America.
The content selection for the time capsule will involve key offices within Congress, including those of both party leaders in both chambers. Items selected will highlight significant legislative achievements and milestones relevant at its burial in 2026.
A parallel bill has been proposed in the Senate by Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire and is supported by Senators Chuck Grassley, Thom Tillis, Richard Blumenthal, Bob Casey, and Mike Rounds.
