Today, the Chairwoman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar (R-FL), along with Congressman Brian Mast (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued a joint statement regarding protests against Nicolás Maduro's regime in Venezuela. These demonstrations are taking place globally on January 9th, ahead of Edmundo González Urrutia's scheduled inauguration on January 10th.
In their statement, they expressed solidarity with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and those protesting against Maduro. "Hoy, Estados Unidos se solidariza con María Corina Machado mientras lidera a millones de venezolanos en protesta contra el brutal régimen chavista de Nicolás Maduro," they stated. They also warned Maduro and his supporters that the United States is monitoring the situation closely.
The congress members further noted that with President Trump's upcoming assumption of office, changes in leadership are anticipated both in Venezuela and the United States. "Cuando el presidente Trump asuma el cargo, los días de apaciguamiento habrán terminado," they added.
