Rep. María Elvira Salazar has addressed a letter to Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamine Huffman, urging the Department to maintain protections for certain groups from deportation. The letter comes in response to new guidance indicating the revocation of the CHNV program.
Salazar's appeal focuses on Cubans, Venezuelans, Nicaraguans, and Haitians without criminal records and pending cases. These individuals have sought asylum through legal channels under the Cuban Adjustment Act and existing asylum laws. "The United States should offer these potential asylees due process until their cases are properly adjudicated," stated Salazar.
She criticized President Biden's creation of the program on what she described as "dubious legal grounds" but emphasized that those enrolled should be allowed to pursue their applications to rectify their status. Salazar has been active in advocating for these communities, including proposals for Parole in Place status for Cubans with I-220A forms at the southern border and adjustment of status for Venezuelans.
Representing Florida’s 27th Congressional District, Salazar's constituency includes a significant number of Cuban, Venezuelan, Nicaraguan, and Haitian Americans.
