Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart, along with his family, has shared the news of the passing of his brother, Lincoln Díaz-Balart. The statement highlights Lincoln's contributions as a "defender of the silenced and oppressed" and notes his authorship of significant legislative acts such as the democracy requirement for lifting U.S. sanctions against Cuba and the Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA).
Lincoln's legacy is said to continue through the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI), which he co-founded in 2003. His dedication to a free Cuba and love for the United States were guiding principles throughout his life, including 24 years in public service with 18 years spent in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The statement acknowledges those surviving Lincoln: his wife Cristina, son Daniel, daughter-in-law Estefania, grandsons Lincoln Daniel and Edwin Rafael, brothers Rafael, Jose, Mario, and their spouses Elba, Brenda, and Tia. He was preceded in death by his first son Lincoln Gabriel.
A public memorial mass will be announced at a later date.
