Representative Frederica Wilson, a seasoned U.S. Congress member serving Florida’s 24th district since 2011, recently posted a series of tweets addressing Haitian Heritage Month and issues related to the Broward Transitional Center. Born in Miami in 1942, Wilson succeeded Kendrick Meek and has been an advocate for her diverse constituency, which includes a significant Haitian community.
On May 1, 2025, Wilson tweeted: “Happy Haitian Heritage Month! This month, we honor the strength, culture, and resilience of the Haitian people. I am proud to represent one of the largest Haitian populations in the United States and thanks to them, our community is more vibrant and stronger.”
The following day, on May 2, 2025, Wilson addressed a serious incident at the Broward Transitional Center, stating: “The death of a detainee under ICE’s watch at the Broward Transitional Center is unacceptable. I’ll be visiting the facility TODAY with @CongresswomanSC to find out what happened and inspect the facility’s conditions. Stay tuned for more.” This was indicative of her ongoing concern for the conditions faced by immigrant detainees.
Later that day, Wilson reflected upon her visit to the facility with further remarks: “Leaving the Broward Transitional Center, I saw how little ICE cares about immigrant detainees. The recent death in the Broward facility is just a tragic example of what happens when we let this government go unchecked. It doesn’t have to be this way.”
Frederica Wilson’s background includes previous roles in the Florida Senate and House of Representatives. Her educational journey began at Fisk University where she graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Wilson, currently residing in Miami Gardens, continues to be a pivotal voice in issues affecting her district.
