On July 18, 2023, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24), cosponsored a bill to protect our democracy, defend it against continued and relentless attacks, and ensure that the voices and votes of regular Americans are heard in our elections. She issued the following statement regarding the reintroduction of the Freedom to Vote Act:
"The Freedom to Vote Act restores power to the people, safeguarding the sacred right to vote that underpins all other rights and forms the bedrock of our democracy. It is a transformative tool that empowers individuals to shape their communities and fulfill America's founding promise," stated Congresswoman Wilson. “From brave civil rights leaders like Congressman John Lewis to my father in South Florida, countless champions have risked their lives for this sacred right, demonstrating its immense power. However, extremist MAGA Republicans seek to hand power to election deniers, dark money groups, and corporate interests. Their promotion of the "Big Lie" aims to undermine the very foundation of our democracy. We will not allow that to occur. We are steadfast in our fight to ensure that everyone has an equal voice in the decisions governing our lives."
The Freedom to Vote Act ensures all Americans can vote in secure, accessible, transparent elections. It protects the right to vote, supports local election workers, bans dark money, and ends partisan gerrymandering, so that our democracy works for the people.
The bill comes as extreme MAGA Republicans continue to spread misinformation about our elections, with some refusing to even accept the results. They have also passed a wave of laws restricting the freedom to vote in states across the country, while a growing flood of corporate and dark money pollute our elections and drown out the voices of regular people.
