WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Representative María Elvira Salazar (R-FL), sent a letter to President Biden urging him to defend Venezuelan presidential candidate María Corina Machado and her campaign from the concerted attacks by the Maduro regime.

"I am writing to you about the best opportunity we have for freedom and democracy in Venezuela and the vital need to protect it," said Representative Salazar. "Maduro fears the popularity of front-runner María Corina Machado and is trying to sabotage her campaign and intimidate her into withdrawing. Don't let him succeed."

The letter highlights the clear reason why the United States must defend María Corina from the ongoing attempts by the Maduro regime to end her campaign. The criminal regime has "disqualified" her through the corrupt General Comptroller's Office with vague and spurious accusations. Maduro has also partnered with Chavista politicians, gangs, and the Colombian terrorist group National Liberation Army (ELN) to threaten María Corina and her campaign offices.

These moves directly violate the Venezuelan people's right to fair and democratic elections. The upcoming presidential primary elections on October 22, 2023, represent the best opportunity for them to break free from over 20 years of socialist tyranny. It is vital that we secure that opportunity for them.

Representative Salazar recently introduced the bipartisan bill VOICE Act with Representative Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) to impose sanctions on the Maduro regime for attempting to prohibit opposition candidates from running in the presidential elections.
