WASHINGTON, D.C. - Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chairwoman María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) has called on the Department of the Treasury and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to negotiate Argentina's $900 million payment due on December 21, 2023. The request comes in light of President Javier Milei's recent inauguration and his efforts to restore order to Argentina's public finances.
Salazar, who attended Milei's inauguration on December 10, 2023, witnessed firsthand the commitment of the new administration to implement a free market agenda. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Salazar stated, "President Milei is not only an economist, but a good economist. Milei will pay down Argentina's debt and bring prosperity to his country - he just needs time."
In her letters to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Salazar emphasized the need for the United States to support Argentina's new president in bringing about the change that the Argentine people voted for. "While Milei has taken immediate measures to address Argentina's budgetary shortfalls, 11 days is simply not enough time for his policies to take effect," Salazar wrote.
Salazar's call for fair treatment and recognition of the United States' longstanding partnership with Argentina is supported by bipartisan representatives. They understand that Milei's economic agenda, which addresses the roots of the economic crisis, requires more time for effective implementation. Salazar is urging the Biden Administration to advocate for the IMF to reach an agreement with the Milei Administration to meet their obligations.
It is worth noting that Congresswoman Salazar represents over ten thousand Argentine Americans in Florida's 27th congressional district, underscoring the personal and political significance of her request.
In conclusion, Salazar's letters to the Treasury Department and the IMF highlight the need for understanding and support for Argentina's new president, Javier Milei, as he works to restore economic stability and prosperity to his country. The time needed for Milei's policies to take effect must be recognized, and the United States' partnership with Argentina should guide efforts to negotiate a fair agreement with the IMF.
