WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar (R-FL), Chair of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, has sent letters to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, urging them to negotiate Argentina's payment of $900 million to the IMF, due on December 21, 2023.
President Milei took office on December 10, which presents an immediate challenge of finding a credible way to assure the IMF that Argentina will restore order in its public finances. While Milei has taken immediate measures to address Argentina's budget deficits, 11 days are not enough for his policies to take effect.
"President Milei is not just an economist, but a good economist," wrote Congresswoman Salazar. "Milei will pay Argentina's debt and bring prosperity to his country, he just needs time."
Congresswoman Salazar attended President Javier Milei's inauguration on December 10, 2023. After meeting with several officials in his cabinet, it became clear that Milei's free-market agenda would be the necessary course of action to rectify a nation that has been hollowed out by socialist economics.
Representatives from both parties in the United States understand that while Milei's economic agenda successfully addresses the root causes of the economic crisis, more time is needed for these policies to be implemented.
To address this concern, Congresswoman Salazar urges the Biden Administration to recognize the United States' longstanding commitment to our partnership with Argentina, advocating for the IMF to reach an agreement with the Milei Administration to fulfill its obligations.
Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar represents over 10,000 Argentine-Americans in Florida's 27th Congressional District.
