Today, Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chairwoman María Elvira Salazar and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast released a joint statement regarding the protests against the Maduro regime in Venezuela. The demonstrations are occurring both within Venezuela and globally on January 9, ahead of Edmundo González Urrutia’s planned inauguration on January 10.

The statement expressed support for María Corina Machado as she leads the protests against Nicolás Maduro's government. It read: “Today, America stands with María Corina Machado as she leads millions of Venezuelans in protest against the brutal, Chavista regime of Nicolás Maduro."

The statement also issued a warning to Maduro: "As Edmundo González prepares to return to Venezuela, we warn Maduro and his thugs the United States is watching and, like Venezuela, it will be under new and stronger leadership soon."

It concluded with a reference to future U.S. policy changes: "When President Trump takes office the days of appeasement are over.”
