In response to the increase in deadly gun violence on school campuses, Barry University, in conjunction with the Miami Shores Police Department, will hold an active shooter simulation training on Thursday, August 11 and Friday, August 12, 2022.
The training is being held to prepare the local campus community and law enforcement to respond to an emergency involving gun violence on campus. The event will take place at the Miami Shores Campus over a two-day period.
These drills tend to be very realistic to prepare our community for any possible active shooter situation and will include a heavy police presence and simulated gunfire. A best practice for active shooter threats is for officers to be trained to immediately engage and stop active violence upon their arrival at the scene. “It is of utmost importance that Miami Shores Police personnel receive the most effective and continuous training to respond to active threats within the community”, stated David Golt, Chief of Miami Shores Police Department.
As a university, we want to ensure we have procedures in place to effectively address any active assailant threats to our community. “It is an unfortunate reality that colleges, universities, and schools need to perform these simulations, but the safety of our faculty, staff and students is of utmost priority”, stated Jennifer Boyd-Pugh, Vice President for University Administration. According to John Buhrmaster, Director of Public Safety, “Working in conjunction with members of the Miami Shores Police Department and having officers assigned to our campus permanently has been an enhancement to our overall campus safety program.”
In addition to the participation of the Miami Shores Police Department, University campus safety personnel, students, and emergency medical personnel will also be onsite.
