Washington, D.C. - Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart, Carlos Giménez, and María Elvira Salazar have introduced a House Resolution recognizing María Corina Machado as Venezuela's legitimate presidential opposition candidate for the upcoming elections. The Senate Companion for this resolution was introduced by U.S. Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio.

In a statement, Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart expressed his support for Machado and condemned the Maduro regime's attempts to exclude legitimate opposition from political participation. He criticized the Biden Administration's decision to relax sanctions on the Maduro dictatorship and its failure to reimpose tough sanctions after the arbitrary November 30 deadline. Díaz-Balart emphasized the need for the United States to stand unequivocally with the Venezuelan people in their struggle for freedom, human rights, and democratic government.

Rep. Carlos Giménez highlighted the threats, intimidation, and silencing faced by opposition candidate María Corina Machado at the hands of the Maduro regime. He described this as a blatant attack on democracy and a sign of the regime's desperation in the face of impending defeat. Giménez called for the United States to stand with the freedom-loving people of Venezuela in their determination to free themselves from communism under Machado's leadership.

Rep. María Elvira Salazar pointed out that the Venezuelan opposition overwhelmingly chose María Corina Machado to lead the fight against the Maduro regime in the upcoming elections. She stressed the importance of the United States offering full support for Machado and her campaign, as millions of Venezuelans around the world rally around her struggle against the dictatorship.

This resolution, introduced in both the House and the Senate, recognizes Machado as the legitimate presidential opposition candidate and condemns the Maduro regime's attempts to suppress opposition voices. It seeks to reaffirm the United States' commitment to supporting the Venezuelan people in their pursuit of freedom, democracy, and human rights.

The introduction of this resolution by Representatives Díaz-Balart, Giménez, and Salazar underscores their dedication to defending democracy and promoting the interests of the Venezuelan people. Their efforts align with a broader international call for free and fair elections in Venezuela, as well as the recognition of legitimate opposition leaders. As the situation in Venezuela continues to unfold, it is crucial for the international community to stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and support their aspirations for a brighter future.
