WASHINGTON D.C.– Today, U.S. Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart(FL-26), along with co-chairs Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz(FL-25), Tony Gonzales(TX-23), Adriano Espaillat(NY-13), Rep. Henry Cuellar(TX-28), and Rep. María Elvira Salazar(FL-27) released a joint statement regarding Colombian President Petro's recent decision to sever diplomatic relations with Israel.

In the statement, the group expressed their strong disapproval, stating, "As bipartisan friends of the Colombian and Israeli people, we unequivocally condemn President Petro’s decision to unilaterally sever diplomatic relations with Israel." They emphasized the detrimental impact of this move on Colombia's national interests and objectives, highlighting the risks it poses to the Jewish community in Colombia amidst a surge in antisemitism.

The representatives criticized President Petro's rhetoric and actions, including his comparison of Israel to the Nazis, support for Hamas' terrorist ideology, and justification of violence against Israeli civilians. They pointed out that this decision not only emboldens Hamas but also hinders global efforts to secure the release of hostages and seek justice for victims of violence in the region.

Furthermore, the group highlighted the longstanding cooperation between Colombia, Israel, and the United States, stating, "These actions do not reflect the views or interests of the Colombian people, who have benefitted for decades from security and economic cooperation with Israel and the United States." They reaffirmed their commitment to fostering strong multilateral ties between the United States, Latin American and Caribbean nations, and Israel.

The Congressional Latino-Jewish Caucus members concluded by denouncing President Petro's decision as disgraceful and not aligned with the mutual interests of the Colombian and Israeli people.
