In a statement issued today, House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere Chairwoman María Elvira Salazar and Ranking Member Joaquin Castro expressed their serious concerns over the recent political violence in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The subcommittee leaders emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles and called for a return to the formal selection process for the attorney general and deputy attorney general positions.

The statement highlighted the need for the Honduran Congress and President Xiomara Castro's administration to ensure checks and balances and an independent judiciary. Chairwoman Salazar and Ranking Member Castro urged all parties involved to respect the will of the people and adhere to the 86 congressional vote requirement as outlined in the Honduran constitution.

"We are seriously concerned by the recent political violence in Tegucigalpa. The process of selecting an attorney general and deputy attorney general for Honduras has been lengthy, but the Honduran Congress and the administration of President Xiomara Castro must uphold the democratic principles of checks and balances and independent judiciary," said Chairwoman Salazar and Ranking Member Castro.

Stressing the importance of democratic values, the subcommittee leaders also expressed their commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between the United States and Honduras. They look forward to engaging with political representatives in Honduras to address the current challenges and reiterate their faith in democracy.

"We strongly urge the parties to return to the formal selection process and respect the will of the people through a process that upholds the 86 congressional vote requirement in accordance with the Honduran constitution. We look forward to engaging with political representatives in Honduras to strengthen our bilateral relationship and emphasize our faith in democracy," stated Chairwoman Salazar and Ranking Member Castro.

The concerns raised by the House Western Hemisphere Subcommittee on the recent events in Honduras come after a hearing held last week regarding the U.S.-Honduras relationship and the state of democracy and the rule of law in Honduras. The subcommittee remains committed to closely monitoring the situation and working towards a resolution.
