County of Miami-Dade issued the following announcement on Sept. 10.
This week, the Biden administration announced that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from six countries, including Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Haiti, will be extended until December 31, 2022.
“This is a welcome relief for thousands of families in Miami-Dade,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “As home to some of the largest communities of TPS holders in Florida and the nation, who contribute so much to our county’s economy and culture, all of Miami-Dade benefits when immigrants can live free from fear of deportation and fully participate in our community. We will continue doing everything we can to support TPS-eligible families on their application process and will continue advocating for a permanent path to citizenship.”
According to the Office of New Americans (ONA) of Miami-Dade, our county is home to about half of the TPS recipients from Haiti, Honduras and Venezuela, and Florida is the second largest state for TPS recipients in the country.
The Office of New Americans is supporting TPS beneficiaries from Venezuela and Haiti with their application process by partnering with local non-profits to host information sessions and free legal clinics. Next week, the ONA will launch a new TPS Center to assist county residents who could potentially apply to benefit from Temporary Protected Status in partnership with local non-profits.
